Details of the Day (April 2011) With reader support, I served 20 random homeless people homemade chili as I trolled urban streets atop my trusty motor-steed named Chili. What a privilege and honor! Two highlights: 1. “Are you handing it to me? I can't see.” She said. I brought the cup closer, her hands slowly wrapped around it as if to catch a butterfly. She probed until she found the spoon, then tapped the top of the chili. She sniffed and gently smiled. “Thank you.” She said so sweetly, I thought for sure all of you could hear it. Did you? 2. “Hey,” I said, with a pseudo-hip head nod. “Hey, What's up?” He, 20-something, responded. “Wanna nice warm cup of homemade chili?” I asked. “Man, I wish.” He said, assuming that I was as down on my luck as he was. “Okay, then!” And I went back to the bike to dish him a cup. “There is kindness in the world. This proves it!” He spat out in near disbelief. So thank you all who helped by purchasing a book or two this season. This event created so much good will and so many smiles (on my face, too!). I've got to do it again, and I might not wait until next year.
