As we left the modest one-set theatre, my girlfriend said, "That was one of the best plays we've seen." And, I have to agree. A simple set with 5 desks for the 5 employees of "Tracks Enterprises" (a wig company) and a hint at the supervisor's office. Doesn't sound like the most exciting venue to spend a couple of hours watching a play; but, the meat of the story makes the setting quite secondary. On the day they learn of her passing, each employee enjoys a spot light moment, a soliloquy as they remember their beautiful and intimate first exchanges with the company's founder and president. This format is seasoned with interesting, moving, and funny interactions between stage solos.
We weren't introduced to the recently deceased Dr. Best, but as the on stage individuals, who's lives she'd touched, began to speak of her .... well … we began to miss her too. Audience members walk away wanting to be that kind of person, the kind that seeks to uplift people as part of their daily lives -- to look at our occupations as a chance to live out our dreams, and help others find theirs. Another fine lesson of the play is to remind us that despite outward appearances, everybody has their own heartfelt issues, and often quick judgments derail otherwise positive interactions.
Moving and Funny, always engaging, we recommend it and look forward to other works by Tann Moore.
Review based on the Sept 28th, 2008 performance at The NoHo Actors' Studio in North Hollywood.
