After resenting being forced to read "The Pearl" in high school. I decided to give Steinbeck another try. It just so happened this was the book that fell into my lap.
If this were a film, it'd be a slow quiet indie. It'd draw you into its farm pace with modesty and grit.
If it were a farmer, it'd warn you that life wasn't fair and that nature had a wicked way of making you a man. And you ought be glad you got that much mentoring out of him.
This wasn't the best book I've ever read, but I liked it, and despite the innocent title, it's as harsh as the life/death cycle. Here's the theme: There are no heroes that can tame mother nature, and her lessons can just as easily make you mean as kind. That latter choice being up to you.
