Here's a quirky comedy that'll give you some philosophic thought to munch on. Generally speaking, I'm not into "pot films," but, Ed Norton in dual roles intrigued me.
The film is well written. In addition to the overriding philosophic quandary it poses, it's rife with rich dialogue. But more impressively, the picture is perfectly directed. The pace is dead on. The tone holds true throughout despite some jarring. (Yes, I know that sounds contradictory). The production balances itself precariously between a message film and a farce -- perhaps just like life. No matter, it feels sincere, and loved by its makers.
Norton's performances are very good, but Nelson is rock solid as the supporting actor. Given his backwoods character, it's a beautiful contrast and surprise that Nelson wrote and directed this oddly bittersweet, thoughtful piece of film. Kudos also to Josh Pais who brings a side character to life with a brilliant awkward edge.
