Has much of the charm of ONCE, but slightly less staying power. Great performances by Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, and to my surprise Adam Levine simply knocks it out of the park. I recognized that Maroon 5 voice, but just couldn't believe a musician could do such a great job acting. In fact, I thought they'd hired an actor and used the singer from Maroon 5 to overdub the singing bits. Kudos!
It's very very watchable, fun (I chuckled many times), musical, and not at all afraid to be schmaltzy. Overall, I enjoyed it. That said, I challenge John Carney to make the next in the series with some staying power. I know that's ambiguous, it's just that a good film stays with the viewer longer than just its screen duration. And, at least for me, (this is of course, very subjective), this film just didn't stay with me. Hmmm. Could that be because I am already a musician and I already know the saving power of music? And, he'd have every right to challenge me to write a better review than this one.
