Lovingly and richly filmed with crisp editing and powerful acting. While loosely a biopic on Freddie Mercury, the film never forgets that music comes first. Engaging, emotional, dramatic, and commanding (like its namesake), this film is artistically compelling and entirely entertaining.
After a string of hard biopics that seem to revel in tearing down musical icons, it's refreshing to find one that doesn't shy from the less flattering aspects of the subject, but doesn't bash us over the head with them either. Others will see the picture in their own ways, but I feel (without having ever met any of the subjects) that the film appears to let Freddie be Freddie, with an eye on celebrating the musical mastery rather than damning an oversized ego.
Despite the many "hero" shots, I'm left with the feeling that Freddie and the band were just people who followed their passions with passion and gave the world some beautiful music.
What an amazing voice! And, man, I love the sound of Brian May's guitar!
