I enjoyed it. Very loosely based on the life of P.T. Barnum, the film introduces us to an 10-ish-year-old P.T. who in just a few scenes becomes 50-ish. And then again, in the third act, the quick pace robs the film of some well-earned depth. That said, the finger-snapping pop music and sharp modern choreography smooth out most of these otherwise coarse transitions.
The plot is painted rather broadly, the characters a bit surfacy, but the music and dance are lovely, the visuals are rich and Jackman is an all-around great entertainer. Zac Efron and Zendaya also add a strong presence in this well-performed work. It certainly made me curious about the real Barnum. If you are too, check out his autobiography. Wikipedia says its print-run was once second only to the New Testament in North America.
