Something about this film's trailer caught my eye - or perhaps I should say - my heart. And with a cast headed up with Greg Kinnear and Thomas Haden Church, I was in. While those two actors give respectable performances, it's really Connor Corum as 4-year-old Colton Burpo that carries this little film with his innocence, sincerity, and hopping step into the church of heaven.
Like his father Todd (in the early part of the film), I personally don't know if Colton really went to heaven. Perhaps he went to what heaven is for him. Life is so magical and mysterious, each of us is given our very own personality, perhaps each of is given our very own way of experiencing heaven -- our very own direct connect to God. I do know that the production, though not rock solid, offers some very sweet moments that will well up tears in your eyes. I cried. And that's good. I also appreciate the humor woven into the piece, as well as successful efforts to depict this small town Rev as a real person.
Dramatically speaking, a bit of a wavering start, with a good build to a sweet, but surprisingly abbreviated, climax.
