Ross Anthony's revision notes:
Warning Spoilers:
Assuming you've seen the movie, let me know what
you think of this alternative ending.
Here is my rewrite:
As the film approaches climax all parties involved
meet up (no pun intended) at the meat factory. Guns
all pointed at each other, the deputy turns his gun
toward the Sheriff and says, "Okay Roger drop
it."
Sheriff, "You won't shoot me, I'm on your
side."
Deputy shoots Sheriff in the leg, Sheriff falls,
drops gun, grimacing. Vin grabs sheriff's gun and
kicks him out of play. Mattie smiles at the Deputy in
amusement, "Well that was damn gentlemanly of you
deputy."
Walking towards him with respect, Mattie holsters
his own pistol then holds out his hand to take the
deputy's firearm. All other firearms are pointed at
the deputy who has since turned to point the gun at
Mattie. But as Mattie approaches the deputy calmly
gives the gun up to him.
"Are you crazy, you think they're gonna let you
live?" The sheriff cries.
Mattie gives the deputy a respectful Mafia head
pat in the back of the neck, "Okay, so where's the
money." (Because it certainly wouldn't be in that
bag!)
Anyway, that's it, the bad guys let the deputy and
Sheriff go, perhaps, marbles video tapes the whole
thing so they don't have to kill 'em. And Mattie can
still give up the life.
