Despite some very rough footage and an early slow pace, this documentary packs an emotional punch and an inspirational tone for education.
Sweet creative animations artistically step up the production value. Simply chalklike line drawings sketched over richly textured backgrounds bring the viewer into the story. These vignettes prime our imaginations.
Of course, the main character is Pedro, a special-ed kid who grew into an impassioned educator/powerhouse. The doc follows his story from the struggling streets of New York to his tenacious college self-recruitment, to teaching, then principally, then finally rethinking the school spaces as an assistant superintendent.
Like Pedro, the film is unconventional. It’s a beautiful thing to watch him relate with students and parents at all levels. Perhaps this film will inspire those with such a spirit to share their talents and insights in the public school arena.
