The Sugar Bean Sisters is a pleasant surprise. Marcia deRousse and Pattie Tierce will crack you up. Their chemistry, good humor and backwoods subtly make for the perfect odd couple of siblings with which to spend a quirky evening dodging gobbly creatures. They give big performances that splendidly bring this eccentric little script to life.
The Sierra Madre Playhouse is the perfect size venue. Not too small that the AC is either to hot or too cold, and not so big that you feel lost and distant. Set design consisted of a sugar cane farm house crafted as if from cardboard -- cozy, yet eerie -- and just the right size for the stage. The lighting complemented it well. Prior to the show, two cat-like creatures quietly (save for a hiss here and there) snake about the stage and tease early-comers.
The show engages from start to finish, though the script misses a bit of build to its fun albeit not-so-profound ending. That said, we really enjoyed it.
