Filmmakers talk about making a picture that is so genuine, valuable, engaging, and on target that audiences will forgive technical glitches. This is that picture. The most notable glitch: audio peaking on many of the interviews. But, I forgive!
Homelessness is a perennial issue and one that many of us wish to alleviate for humanitarian reasons (and also practical reasons). Recently large sums of money have been donated toward the cause of reducing homelessness, but can the proposed solutions really be effective? Why not ask someone on the streets? Better yet, periodically check in with someone living on the streets who is looking into solutions from the front line.
With a set up like that – I eagerly sought out this film (which was easy because it's watchable free online: Tony-The Movie). My only concern was that I simply wouldn't like the main subject, the film's namesake – Tony. If that's also your concern, worry not. Tony, while clearly dealing with demons of his own, is charming, intelligent, and sociable in an understated introverted way. He shares his thoughts concerning police, public and private bed offerings, as well as other programs for the homeless. Government officials and others are also interviewed – many by Tony himself.
If you're trying to get a better picture of the problem so as to help formulate a better solution, this film is a great place to start. It's important, enlightening and engaging. I highly recommend it.
(Note to Director: Kindly use auto-leveling next time – at least on a backup recorder. Also – cool ending-credits! Great Idea! Nice job over all, let me know when the next film releases.)
