This well paced, fun, and engaging film opens on the sleepy side. (I prepared myself for a B movie.) However, once Awkwafina and Ken Jeong hit the screen, the party starts. Both are hilarious, though it's really Awkwafina who, springing into the picture, gives the film its latent momentum. A solid script, strong direction, lavish sets, brisk editing and some heartfelt acting keep that elevated pace rollicking.
Aside from the shaky opening scenes, I would point out only one other area that could use improvement – but to do so would be to spoil – so, suffice to say – it's a good film. Treat yourself to a little overseas travel, a solid tried-and-true love story, and fresh comedy. You'll laugh, maybe cry, and root for good-hearted young lovers. And best of all, you'll be entertained.
Oh, and the music is a blast. I love the Chinese versions of a couple of golden oldies Money - That’s What I Want (made popular by the Beatles) and I Want Your Love - I Want You To Be My Baby. Great sound track.
