I am a devoted fan of Christopher Nolan - brilliant writer and filmmaker. Interstellar - one of my all time fav's. However, I suppose, they can't all be gems.

Homer's classic journey is long and arduous, and so is the movie. The first 30 minutes are clunky and slow. Despite great acting talent, the number of minutes I actually felt emotionally involved were limited to 5 or 10. Those moments were aptly won. The trojan horse story for one, holds some mighty weight, but many of the other vignettes, feel small despite the large foes. And then, there were also those moments that simply missed. The close-in scene with the queen and the ill-intentioned suitor plays tonally awkward. I felt embarrassed for both actors. And on a technical note, more than one close up of Tom Holland fell short of sharp focus.

Some of the special effects were pretty awesome, but for how long can one be "moved" by extras in armor being torn and tossed asunder?

Definitely, not a date film.

I thought about leaving, two or three times, but kept expecting something redeeming. The build to the final 30 minutes are rather rewarding, but again, that momentum gets stunted by an extended sequence of men being stabbed and thrown asunder.

Not my cup of tea, but hey lots of people like it.

There's a lesson here, though ironically, I don't think the worthy message rises above all the killing.
