Return of the Giants
Blue Whales 3D
Review by Ross Anthony

The film follows a researcher in the Golf of California who has discovered that the mighty blue whales who love these waters have grown thin and calveless for several years.

Another story line explores a portion of the Indian Ocean where these whales have been overfished for so long that a single blue hasn't been spotted there in years. A team of researchers sets out to find one.

While there is some beautiful cinematography in the mix, a mid-film lull takes its toll on the momentum.

That said, I loved watching these huge mammals surface and breath! So majestic. The film is loaded with those clips.

Filmmakers chose a wonderful way to open the picture with mystery and curiosity. The big screen engulfs the audience with blurry shards of sea green light. We wade under the surface as whale songs vibrate those huge IMAX speakers. Wordless in wonder. What a great place to start.

BTW, I screened this film at California Science Center. Not only does this theatre house one of the very few true big beautiful IMAX screens in Los Angeles, but you've also got the Science Center, an actual space shuttle, a huge Rose Garden, The Natural History Museum, a free dinosaur, and very soon the amazing Lucas Museum. This is just one awesome piece of a splendid day marveling at a whole curation of wonders!
