From the Press Notes: MRS CHRISTMAS explores the journey of a woman who inherits the holiday traditions of her recently deceased, estranged mother. Known in their small town as Mrs Christmas, her mother left behind a legacy of festive cheer and complex emotions for her daughter. Through an evening of song and over-the-top stories, the daughter navigates the complexities of their relationship, delving into themes of tradition, loss, legacy, and questioning how we begin to heal the complicated relationships with our families. Says Playwright Tom Jacobson, "In high school I was recruited to the choir by a very clever choir mistress, who understood that teens could be lured by food,” recalls playwright Tom Jacobson. “I learned a lot from her, including the story of Mrs Christmas. After Harriet went to choir heaven and I felt responsible for keeping the memory of Mrs Christmas alive. My family’s crafting queen was aunt Caryl. Our holiday gift from her was the newest craft she’d learned, from decoupage to soft boxes to Swedish straw Christmas ornaments. Now that she’s in craft heaven (down the hall from choir heaven), Caryl’s crafts are our cherished memories. Mrs Christmas is my tribute to these two indomitable women and to all the mothers and daughters who struggle to love each other. Maybe some of Mrs Christmas’s previously undiscovered carols will help.”
