I was recently asked what album I would want with me were I marooned on a desert Island for a year. "Friday Night in San Francisco" came to mind. Oh, to be at that concert in 1981. So when I saw two flamenco guitarists playing in nearby Orange County, I was happy to attend.
Despite being compared to Di Meola, McLaughlin, and De Lucia in their prime, Caro and Molina filled the intimate room at the Sanctuary Studio with rhythm, culture, passion and wonderful flamenco guitar! If you think of music as a river and musicians as riverboat captains, then Caro and Molina aptly float you on that voyage.
The Sanctuary Studio is an absolutely beautiful place to enjoy the expression of musicians. Twenty seats or so, warmly lit, decorated with brass instruments and a love for music. You're essentially in for a house concert - hosted by Simon Drew.
Billed as a duo, this is Caro's concert, with Molina as a guest performer. The two were also joined by their friend (at the last minute they told us) for percussive clapping and stomping support. The three needed a song or two to align, but as the show progressed, the clapping and boots to wood floor, complemented the strumming like fireworks to an already jubilant celebration. I had a splendid time.
The sanctuary studio offers classes, performances, and even philosophical keynotes. Check it out in downtown Santa Ana.
